Section 2: Affected neurotransmitters and parts of the brain

(Ro)accutane interacts with receptors of several neurotransmitters that are g-protein coupled, including corresponding hormonal neurosteroids, serotonin, dopamine, norephinephrine, melatonin and GABA. Malfunctioning receptors, decreased receptor expression and lessened metabolism of neurotransmitters are suggested to be effects of a (Ro)accutane exposure. The retinoid signaling found in several parts of the human brain is affected. A significant fall in metabolism has been observed. Cell losses have been suggested. The affected parts of the brain include the hippocampus, orbitofrontal cortex, blood-brain barrier, the subventricular zone and hypothalamus
